Das dunkle Herz,
das in sich lauscht,
ershaut den Fruhling
nicht nur am Hauch und Duft,
der durch das Leuchten bluht;
es fuhlt ihn
an dem dunklen Wurzelreich,
das an die Toten ruhrt:
Was wird,
legt sich mit zarten Wurzeln
an das Wartende im Dunkel,
trinkt Kraft und Stille
aus der Nacht.
eh 'sich's dem Tage schenkt,
eh' es als Liebeskelch
zum Himmel duftet
und eh' aus ihm zu ihm
ein goldnes Flattern Leben tragt:
Ich bin nicht mein.
Die Quellen meiner Seele,
sie sprudeln in die Wiesen dessen,
der micht liebt
und machen seine Blumen bluhen

The dark heart
which hearkens to itself,
perceives spring
not only by the breeze and scent
which blossom through its glow;
it feels spring
in the dark realm of roots,
which reaches to the dead.
that which grows

it drinks strength and repose
from the night
before it gives itself to the day,
before as a chalice of love
it sends its fragrance to heaven,

Oft am Brunnen, wenn es dämmert,
Sieht man sie verzaubert stehen
Wasser schöpfen, wenn es dämmert.
Eimer auf und nieder gehen.
In den Buchen Dohlen flattern
Und sie gleichet einem Schatten.
Ihre gelben Haare flattern
Und im Hofe schrein die Ratten.
Und umschmeichelt von Verfalle
Senkt sie die entzundenen Lider.
Dürres Gras neigt im Verfalle
Sich zu ihren Füßen nieder.
Often at the well, at dawn,
one sees it standing, spellbound.
The water-scoop, at dawn
Rises and falls.
In the beeches, western jackdaws flutter
And they resemble shades,
Their yellow hair fluttering
Above a yard-shrine of squirrels.
They compliment the purity,
lowering their fiery eyelids.
Dry grass bends, purifying itself
down to its roots.
